When the Hothead Speaks. Simulated Annealing Optimality Theory for Dutch Fast Speech
نویسنده
چکیده
Simulated Annealing, a wide-spread technique for combinatorial optimisation, is employed to find the optimal candidate in a candidate set, as defined in Optimality Theory (OT). Being a heuristic techniques, simulated annealing does not guarantee to return the correct solution, and yet, some result is always returned within a constant time. Similarly to language production, this time framework can be diminished with the cost of diminishing correctness. We demonstrate how simulated annealing can model linguistic performance, built upon a competence theory, namely, OT. After having applied simulated annealing to OT, we attempt to reproduce empirical observations on metrical stress in Dutch fast speech. Simulated annealing necessitates defining a topology on the candidate set, as well as an exact formulation of the constraint OUTPUTOUTPUT CORRESPONDENCE.

How to Define Simulated Annealing for Optimality Theory?
Optimality Theory (OT) requires an algorithm optimising the Harmony function on the set of candidates. Simulated annealing, a well-known heuristic technique for combinatorial optimisation, has been argued to be an empirically adequate solution to this problem. In order to generalise simulated annealing for a non-real valued Harmony function, two representations of a violation profile are propos...
متن کاملA Mushy State Simulated Annealing
It is a long time that the Simulated Annealing (SA) procedure has been introduced as a model-free optimization for solving NP-hard problems. Improvements from the standard SA in the recent decade mostly concentrate on combining its original algorithm with some heuristic methods. These modifications are rarely happened to the initial condition selection methods from which the annealing schedules...
متن کاملFormant Frequencies of Dutch Vowels in a Text, Read at Normal and Fast Rate*
Speaking rate is thought to affect the spectral features of vowels. Target-undershoot models of vowel production predict more spectral reduction and coarticulation of vowels in fast-rate speech than in normal-rate speech. To test this prediction, a meaningful Dutch text of about 850 words was read twice by an experienced newscaster, once at a normal speaking rate and once as fast as possible. A...
متن کاملStochastic and deterministic networks for texture segmentation
This paper describes several texture segmentation algorithms based on deterministic and stochastic relaxation principles, and their implementation on parallel networks. The segmentation problem is posed as an optimization problem and two different optimality criteria a re considered. The first criterion involves maximizing the posterior distribution of the intensity field given the label field ...
متن کاملElephants and Optimality Again
Children display a surprising delay in correctly resolving pronouns, while they employ Chomsky’s binding principles correctly in production and in resolving reflexives. We account for the mistakes as performance errors that are predicted by an Optimality Theoretical model implemented using simulated annealing. Our experiments suggest three novel explanations of the facts. Additionally, the Opti...
